A popular Spanish-language radio DJ known as "El Cucuy" was booked Wednesday on suspicion of making criminal threats in connection with a New Year's Day confrontation with police.

Maximo Almendares, 53, was released after posting $50,000 bail at the Los Angeles Police Department's Devonshire Station, where he was accompanied by a lawyer as he turned himself in, police said.

Police were called to Almendares' Northridge home at about 7 a.m. Monday on "an apparent domestic violence call where alleged criminal threats were made," Officer Jason Lee said.

Lee said he could not release details on the alleged criminal threats.

Almendares reportedly made threats on his wife and a police officer, and that his 28-year-old son had a wound to his chest.

Almendares is known for speaking out against domestic violence and supporting humanitarian causes.
