The Manliest Drinks in the World
We’re not talking manly drinks like Long Island Iced Teas.
This isn’t about how quickly you can get drunk; nor are we talking about drinks with bad ass names like Snake Bite or Mind Eraser.
This is a list of the classics.
The drinks of wise, confident men.
Drinks that have been around for ages; not made-up at last year’s homecoming party at the frat bar.
Think Frank Sinatra, James Bond, Ernest Hemingway, Winston Churchill…
8. Rusty Nail
¾ oz. scotch
¼ oz. Drambuie
Usually served on the rocks in an old fashioned glass or can also be served ’straight up’ in a stemmed martini glass. Garnish with a twist.*
*For those of you who don’t know, a twist is a strip of lemon rind that is twisted above the finished cocktail or sometimes rubbed along the rim of the glass to add subtle flavor.
7. Gin and Tonic
2 oz. gin
5 oz. tonic water
1 lime wedge
If this drink is made well, by mixing perfect proportions using a good gin. It’s an incredibly smooth drink. Served on the rocks in a highball glass.
6. Scotch and Soda (or just Scotch on the rocks)
1 oz. club soda
1½ oz. scotch
Scotch and soda is served on the rocks in a highball glass. Scotch on the rocks is usually served in a rocks glass (aka “old fashioned glass”).
5. B&B
1 oz. Bénédictine

Served on the rocks in a cordial glass or straight in a snifter. Any drink in a snifter is immediate sophistication.
4. Gibson

Similar to a gin martini with the slight difference of onion over olive. Served in a stemmed martini glass.
Anyone who’s drink is garnished with an pickled onion (or 3) is a man in my book.
3. Manhattan
1 oz. sweet vermouth
1-4 oz. whiskey (depending on how sweet you like it)
Dash of Angostura bitters
Traditionally served in a stemmed martini glass can also be served on the rocks in a rocks glass for the weaklings out there trying to dilute their whiskey.
2. Martini
2.5 oz. gin
.5 oz. dry vermouth
olives or lemon twist
Served in a stemmed martini glass. This all time classic was originally made with gin. Nowadays it is also prepared with vodka in place of gin. Either way you choose, be sure to order high quality liquor since that’s all you’ll taste and the more expensive the liquor the smoother it usually is.
1. Old Fashioned

2 dashes bitters
1 tsp. sugar or 1 sugar cube
splash of soda
1 orange slice
1 lemon twist
2 cherries
The sugar and bitters are muddled together in an old-fashioned cocktail glass before ice, soda, and whiskey is added. Its typically garnished with an orange slice, lemon twist, and 2 cherries.
